Here’s what you missed while you were obsessing over Prince Harry’s engagement

I know you’ve been busy today taking in everything you could read or watch about the exciting news of ’s engagement and probably haven’t been able to think about or focus on the stuff going in on the world around you. But if you’ll give me just a second, I’d like to tell you about a few important things that might actually impact your life a little more than a royal wedding across the pond.

Here are just a few of the many important things that happened while you took to social media to talk about the royals and whatever other celebrity news is captivating your attention this week.

The government agency that protects your right as a consumer has been thrown into chaos because its director resigned and now no one knows who is running the place. The outgoing director appointed Leandra English to replace him, but Donald Trump appointed Mick Mulvaney to the post. At issue are two laws about who has the right to fill government vacancies. Meanwhile, nobody’s quite sure who is running the show at an agency that protects the rights of consumers during a time of year when consumers need the most protection.

Oh. Sorry. I forgot. You watch TMZ. A consumer is someone who buys stuff. So, that’s you. The agency is called the , and I know that the words Bureau and Financial sound boring to you, but this is important because it protects your rights when you go shopping. Pretty important stuff, don’t you think?

While talking to a group of , referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren as Pocahontas. It is a name he has called her before, in reference to her claims of having a Native American heritage. It probably isn’t a name he should call anyone, but it didn’t play particularly well with an audience of Native Americans.

By the way, fun fact you may not have known… Pocahontas wasn’t just a Disney cartoon. She was a real person.

It was also reported today that Donald Trump is claiming the Access Hollywood tape — I know you love — where he was caught on microphone saying derogatory things about women was faked. Even though we heard his voice and saw him get off the bus at the end of the tape, the president is asking us to deny what our eyes saw and our ears heard. This is something straight out of a book you have never read called 1984, but you should read it sometime soon.

Why is this important? Because the president of the United States is either removed from reality or wants you to ignore reality and only accept his version of it. Any time a political leader has done that, it has ended badly.

I know you find taxes boring and you don’t like the idea of paying them, but you need to know that there’s a new tax plan being debated by Congress this week that will change the way we do taxes. If it passes, you may not have to itemize anymore. If you do have to itemize, you may not be able to take some of the deductions you used to.

Wait, please don’t go off and look at more pictures of Prince Harry and is soon-to-be-bride. Let me try to do this without boring you with words like itemize, deductions and tax. This umm — thing — Congress is doing will either put more money in your pocket or less, and you probably ought to spend your time learning about it.

A Russian jet buzzed a Navy spy plane over the Black Sea. Buzzing is the practice of flying as close to something as possible. Basically, the Russians were telling the navy jet to buzz off and go home. This isn’t necessarily uncommon, but it shows that tensions between the United States and Russia are rising. Also, some residents of Hawaii are particularly concerned about North Korea. North Korea, as you may have heard, is developing nuclear weapons, and one of their potential targets is Hawaii.

We have to talk about a government agency again. I see your eyes glazing over, so let me try to make this painless for both of us.

There’s a guy named Ajit Pai,
who wants to raise Internet prices sky high.
If he succeeds, and he probably will,
it’s going to affect your Internet bill.
He wants to let AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast
Make some sites and apps not load as fast.
You can get them back up to speed
with the add-on package you need,
but at the end of the day, you’ll pay more.

So, anyway, that’s what’s been going on in the world while you’ve been taking in all the important news about royal engagements.
