The name “Speaking Truth to Stupid” comes from a line in the HBO series “The Newsroom.” In the scene, a news producer is trying to convince the anchor to look away from ratings to produce a news program that matters and informs the public. A video clip and the quote are below:
“Reclaiming the fourth estate. Reclaiming journalism as an honorable profession. A nightly newscast that informs a debate worthy of a great nation. Civility, respect and a return to what’s important; the death of bitchiness; the death of gossip and voyeurism; speaking truth to stupid. No demographic sweet spot; a place where we can all come together.”
This blog exists because the American public is by-and-large, for lack of a better word, stupid. So many choose to live uninformed lives, either indifferent to current events that shape society or cherry-picking their news to support only their viewpoint.
We live in a society that is more concerned about the plight of the Kardashians than the plight of orphans who are sold into the slave trade. As a society, we care more about scandal and salacious gossip than we do about how the government spends taxpayer money. We are obsessed with reality TV and turn a blind eye to the reality that surrounds us. We are, as a result, ridiculously uninformed.
This blog exists to point out, satirize and possibly, maybe, hopefully inform.
So, is there anything wrong with Reality TV? Is there a problem with people who want to keep up with the Joneses or the Kardashians? No. But when we would rather focus on images of the train wreck than on how to prevent more train wrecks we lose something as a society. It is time to become more informed.
